CARRY OUT YOUR VISION IN VUOSAARI! > PARTNERS > VUOSAARI FOUNDATION
Vuosaari FoundationThe Vuosaari Foundation is a multi-purpose community group jointly run by
fourteen condominiums in Vuosaari. The foundation was established by a
registered association, Asuntosäästäjät ry, in 1965 in order to start
up and, to an extent, also to provide those municipal sector services from
which the nascent neighbourhood would not have otherwise been able to
benefit for a long time. The foundation's capital was invested mainly in land property which was first used when building new facilities such as Vuosaari school and nursery. Roads and sports areas were also built. The most significant early project was the construction of the Vuosaari bridge, built with a loan and completed in 1966. In 1971 the bridge and the debts were sold to to the City of Helsinki. At the same time, the foundation handed over most of its land to the city. Another major project was the construction of a sports centre in the late 1970s. Like Vuosaari bridge, it was built with the aid of a loan and the ownership was later transferred to the City of Helsinki. On the cultural side, the foundation initiated a sizeable Vuosaari book project, a co-effort with the Vuosaari Society resulting in a published book in 2005. The foundation funded the project with a significant sum of money and was also actively involved in the journalistic work. Nowadays the main purpose of the Vuosaari Foundation is to develop Vuosaari as a pleasant and enjoyable neighbourhood. It does this by monitoring the developments in city planning and zoning, municipal engineering, traffic conditions, amenities and nature conservation. It actively engages itself in preparing Vuosaari-related statements and initiatives. The foundation also supports local organisations and culture. It selects Vuosaari's Person of the Year, which has been a significant annual occasion since 1992. The title acknowledges important contributions made to Vuosaari and its residents. |
